thankful indeed
It’s been a rough year for my family. My father passed away in May, shortly after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer. A month later, Melanie was diagnosed with breast cancer. I got past the upset and angry stage quickly and I can tell you with certainty that I have a lot to be thankful for.
- Time: My family got a few weeks with my father before he passed. This is infinitely better than not having any time at all.
- Family: Although bittersweet, my father passing has brought the family closer together.
- Persistence: Melanie did her self-checks regularly. She found the lump this way, only a few months after her doctor did an annual exam.
- Modern medicine and technology: Decades of breast cancer research have made it incredibly more survivable. Many doctors have applied (and are still applying) their knowledge to help her survive.
- Kindness: Friends and family helping out with babysitting, food, you name it… and providing endless encouragement. Even a simple “you inspire me” that Melanie got from a random passing stranger does more than you know.
- Strength and will: Melanie has it, lots of it. Her strength helps me to be strong.
- Kids: Lauren and Brody are an endless source of laughter and happiness.
I’m thankful for life in general. Sure, something like that should go without saying. But, when I think about everything that’s happened and is still happening this year… words cannot describe how thankful I am for the life that I have and the people that are in it with me. Because it sure could be a lot worse.
